The Nigeria Police Force has deployed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Simeon Udofia Akpanudom to head the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon Close, Lagos, bringing to the role a wealth of experience, professionalism, and strategic leadership built over more than three decades of service.
AIG Akpanudom is widely regarded as a seasoned and accomplished officer whose career has been defined by discipline, operational excellence, and a deep commitment to national security. His appointment to oversee one of the country’s most critical investigative formations is seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the fight against complex and financial crimes.
Born on August 4, 1967, in Ukana Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, AIG Akpanudom joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). From the very beginning of his career, he distinguished himself among his peers, emerging as the Best All-Round Cadet ASP of Course 17/92, a feat that earned him the prestigious Inspector-General of Police’s Sword of Honour.
Academically, the AIG is highly accomplished. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Calabar. He also obtained an Advanced Certificate in Industrial Safety and Control from the University of Port Harcourt, and a Master’s degree in Security and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna. His intellectual depth has been further sharpened through several professional courses, including the Strategic Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos, and the Higher Defence Management Course at the National Defence College, Abuja.
Over the years, AIG Akpanudom has undergone extensive training both within and outside Nigeria, equipping him with modern policing skills and global best practices. His areas of specialization include intelligence-led policing, conflict mitigation, election security management, and peace support operations. He also participated in key international training programmes facilitated by organizations such as USAID and the Interfaith Centre in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts, Boston, where he gained broader insights into security governance and conflict resolution.
His career trajectory reflects a rich blend of operational, investigative, and administrative experience across various police commands and formations. He was the pioneer Officer-in-Charge of Mgbuoba Police Station, now known as Ozuoba Division, in Rivers State. Over time, he served as Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in several strategic divisions, including Eleme, Rumuepirikom, Ahoada, Yelwa, and GRA, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership in crime prevention and community policing.
AIG Akpanudom also held key operational roles such as Officer-in-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Second-in-Command of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Bauchi State Command. His leadership capacity further earned him appointments as Area Commander in Calabar Metropolis and as a directing staff at the Police College, Ikeja, where he contributed to the training and mentorship of younger officers.
On the international stage, he served with distinction in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), where he was awarded the United Nations Medal in recognition of his contributions to global peacekeeping efforts.
In the course of his career, he has also held several high-level administrative positions, including Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), as well as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in various capacities. These include DCP, Zonal CID Zone 9 Umuahia, and DCP Operations in Cross River State Command.
Prior to his elevation and current deployment, AIG Akpanudom served as Commissioner of Police in charge of the Anti-Fraud Section at the FCID Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. In that role, he played a pivotal part in strengthening investigative processes and tackling financial crimes, earning commendations for his professionalism and results-oriented approach.
AIG Akpanudom’s outstanding service has earned him numerous awards and recognitions, including fellowship of the Defence College (fdc) and a PhD (Honoris Causa) in Leadership from Leadimpact University, Denver, Colorado. He is also affiliated with several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), the Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Beyond his professional life, he is a family man, married to Margaret Simeon Akpanudom, and blessed with children. He enjoys reading, writing, swimming, brisk walking, and listening to gospel music.
