The 7th edition of the Silent Heroes Awards was held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at the Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro, Abuja, honoring remarkable Nigerians who have made significant, yet often silent, contributions to the nation’s progress.
This year’s ceremony recognized forty distinguished awardees from politics, business, civil service, media, and security sectors. Among them was ACC John Attah Onoja, Commander of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals — a man widely recognized for his uncompromising service in protecting the nation’s mineral resources.
ACC Onoja has become a symbol of discipline and integrity within the NSCDC, rejecting numerous bribe offers from illegal miners who tried to induce him and his team to compromise their duties. His resolve has been a key factor in protecting the country’s mining sector from theft, illegality, and environmental damage — making him a silent hero in the true sense of the award.
Other award recipients at the event included Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo; Tony Elumelu, chairman of Heirs Holdings; Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II; and Minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, alongside several other distinguished Nigerians.
Established in 2018, the Silent Heroes Awards celebrate the service of patriotic citizens who serve their country quietly, without expecting accolades or recognition. According to Project Coordinator, Ozioma Sonia Odita-Sunday, the award aims to honor those who pursue their duties with diligence, discipline, and fairness — making a huge impact without making headlines.
In his closing remarks on behalf of the award recipients, ACC John Attah Onoja expressed appreciation to the organizers for identifying and honoring the sacrifices made by him and his team. He recognized the Commandant General of NSCDC, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, for providing the opportunity and encouragement to pursue their mission. ACC Onoja also thanked the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for keying into the Commandant General’s vision and launching the Special Mining Marshals in March 2024. Furthermore, he expressed deep appreciation to the Honorable Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Henry Dele Alake, for his continued support, guidance, and encouragement.
The award underscores ACC Onoja’s remarkable role in securing the country’s resources and strengthening the NSCDC’s ability to perform its duties effectively.
