A deadly assault by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Edikwu Ankpali community in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State has claimed the lives of at least 25 people, leaving many others injured.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday, June 1, has been described by locals as a “Black Sunday.” Eyewitnesses reported sustained gunfire for several hours, with little to no intervention from security operatives.
“I was in my house when I heard gunshots,” recounted a resident who chose to remain anonymous. “People were running in every direction. It was total chaos and confusion.”
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, especially over the perceived silence and inaction of government authorities.
“This is not the first time our community has been attacked,” lamented a local leader. “We’ve lost countless lives and properties to these senseless killings. We are calling on the government to act swiftly and decisively to protect our people.”
As of press time, the Benue State Government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
This latest massacre adds to the growing wave of violence that has plagued Benue State in recent years, reigniting fears of ethnic cleansing and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
Residents are currently making arrangements for the mass burial of the victims. The community remains in mourning, with urgent appeals being made for enhanced security measures to forestall further bloodshed.
