A brutal attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on the community of Edikwu Ankpali in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State has left at least 25 people dead and many others injured.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday, June 1, has been described as a “Black Sunday” by locals. Eyewitnesses reported hearing continuous gunfire for several hours, with little to no intervention from security forces.
“I was in my house when I heard the sound of gunfire,” said a resident, who preferred to remain anonymous. “I ran out of my house and saw people running in all directions. It was a scene of chaos and confusion.”
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation, with many criticizing the silence of those in positions of power.
“This is not the first time that our community has been attacked,” said a local leader. “We have lost many lives and properties to these attacks. We urge the government to take immediate action to protect our people.”
The Benue State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the attack.
The latest massacre is part of a growing wave of violence that has plagued Benue State, reigniting fears of ethnic cleansing and a humanitarian crisis.
As of press time, residents are preparing for mass burials of the victims. The community is still reeling from the attack, with many calling for greater security measures to be put in place to prevent future attacks.
