The Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) has received with deep shock the sad news of the death of former Inspector-General of Police and immediate past Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase.
Dr. Arase meant so many things to many people who crossed his path while he was alive — a police officer with an uncommon touch of professionalism, a reformer with vision, and above all, a mentor and friend to journalists, especially the crime reporting community.
Our association shared a long and cordial relationship with him.
As far back as his days as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, he identified with CRAN.
Even after rising to the pinnacle of his career as Inspector-General of Police and later as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, he never distanced himself. He either attended our annual lectures and awards in person or ensured he was represented by capable officers. That humility, respect, and consistency endeared him to us.
To CRAN, Dr. Solomon Arase will remain an unforgettable mentor — one who not only appreciated the role of the media in accountability and nation building but also encouraged us to strive for professionalism in our duties.
His death has come to us as a rude shock. Nigeria has lost one of its most distinguished policing minds, and CRAN has lost a true friend and ally.
We commiserate with his immediate family, the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, and the entire nation. We pray God to grant his soul eternal rest and comfort those he left behind.
